\"\"<\/a>I went to my first Agile Conference!\u00a0 I guess I\u2019m always a bit uneasy when I\u2019m surrounded by people who more or less think the same way I do. On the other hand, it feels great! It\u2019s a stark contrast from what I\u2019m used to – you know, being surrounded by Architects, DBAs, PMOs and project managers who a waiting in the wings to save the day when this \u201cScrum thing\u201d fails.<\/p>\n

So for five days, I dove in the pleasant warmth of my fellow agilists and shared ideas, laughs and a few drinks.\u00a0 Attending the wide variety of sessions was my preferred activity and a great opportunity to listen, participate and learn.<\/p>\n

Enough chit chat, let\u2019s get right into it…<\/p>\n

My first session <\/a>was \u201cLeader’s Workshop: Making Change Happen and Making it Stick<\/a>\u201d with Mary Poppendieck.\u00a0 I won’t go into details so here are a few points…<\/p>\n

Mary states that to encourage change, one needs to provide:<\/p>\n

1-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The proper kind of motivation<\/p>\n

2-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0A clear direction<\/p>\n

3-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A supportive environment<\/p>\n

So what motivates people? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Mary references books such as Switch, Drive and that great video <\/a>by RSAnimate<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

A very interesting point is to manage employees as if they were volunteers. \u00a0With money being out of the equation, what needs to put in place and maintained to keep motivation at a high level? \u00a0What \u00a0keeps a volunteer motivated?<\/p>\n

  2. Structure and guidance<\/li>\n
  3. Successful project<\/li>\n
  4. Ownership<\/li>\n
  5. Autonomy<\/li>\n
  6. Bragging rights<\/li>\n
  7. Mastery<\/li>\n
  8. Constructive dissonance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What I take back from this session<\/strong><\/p>\n

    You can throw all the cash you want at your problems and they still won\u2019t go away.\u00a0 If you want successful projects, hire smart people, offer them a clear direction, a few rules, and get out of their way.\u00a0 Smart people will find a way to make it work.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
